Princeton University The Princeton University Art Museum invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Curator of European Art.The Curator helps lead the Museum's program in European art from the medieval period to 1945 and must be an experienced individual with superb academic credentials who possesses meaningful curatorial experience, ideally in an academic setting, and the ability to formulate and advance a vision for a university museum with an established commitment to European painting and sculpture.Reporting to the Chief Curator, and working in close coordination with the Director and the Associate Director for Collections and Exhibitions, the Curator will assume a full range of curatorial responsibilities including crafting an ambitious program of temporary exhibitions, research, and scholarly publications. The Curator will work closely with faculty and students to foster significant and sustained curricular and scholarly engagement with the collections, including periodically teaching courses in European art and regularly participating in group and guest teaching. Working within a team environment, and supervising project-based research assistants and student interns, the Curator will promote dialogue, engagement, and collaboration both within the Museum and beyond. The Curator will be able to help shape the ongoing development of the Museum's collections through the stewardship of relationships with collectors and through judicious major acquisitions, and will cultivate collectors and benefactors including individuals, foundations, and other sources. The position will be filled at the rank of assistant or associate curator, depending on qualifications. QualificationsThe position requires a demonstrable track record of active engagement with scholarly research; experience in developing and organizing exhibitions, placing the history of European art within a range of contexts; superb written and verbal communication skills; proven administrative abilities, with project management experience strongly preferred; an aptitude for (and preferably experience in) working effectively with collectors and prospective donors to cultivate collections and financial resources; a strong orientation toward collaborative work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment; and the ability to work both autonomously and collectively as needed.An M.A. in the history of European painting and sculpture from any period dating from the Medieval era up to 1945 is required, along with meaningful curatorial experience, ideally in an academic setting. The Ph.D. is strongly preferred. Advanced knowledge of research methodologies in the fields covered by European art is required, as is evidence of a growing network of relationships in the community of museums, galleries, and collectors. A record of scholarly publication is strongly preferred, and is essential at the Associate Curator rank. Knowledge of conservation practices and standards; experience with issues of cultural property ownership, laws, and ethics; and experience with cataloguing works of art and with automated collections management systems are all preferred. Demonstrable written and spoken language skills for area(s) of expertise are required.For appointment at the Assistant Curator level, early career scholar/curators with the Ph.D. will be considered (the terminal degree should be complete by the time the candidate would assume the position). For appointment at the Associate Curator level, candidates with five to seven years of increasingly responsible curatorial experience will be considered, with or without the Ph.D. so long as evidence of advanced research abilities and publications is present.To learn more about the Princeton University Art Museum, please visit http://artmuseum.princeton.edu.
