Curator of Visual Arts

KEY ACCOUNTABILITES

• Works to support the AWAACC’s ambitious program of exhibitions and innovative gallery displays and presentations
• Conducts quality art historical research primarily focused on exhibitions and artist projects
• Manages curatorial projects and tracks and executes interpretive plans related to curatorial initiatives, large and small
• Develop programming in support of the permanent exhibit, August Wilson: A Writer’s Landscape opening June 2021
• Coordinates and oversees arrangements related to visiting scholars/artists/curators, including, but not limited to AWAACC-hosted visual arts symposiums and curatorial-driven events
• Liaises with other AWAACC departments as needed to communicate updates and key information about curatorial projects in an as needed and timely manner
• Provides tours of the exhibitions and speaks with visitors, donors and AWAACC support groups about curatorial initiatives and activities as needed
• Trains docents for gallery tours
• Interviews gallery attendants along with gallery manager
• Performs other duties as assigned or required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Background in 20th and 21st Century Modern and Contemporary Art preferred
• Preference is given to candidates with a specialty in African American and African Diaspora art
• Experience working in a museum and a proven track record of realizing complex projects
• An advanced degree in art history, curatorial studies, critical theory, or a related field
• A minimum of five years of museum or exhibition space experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
• Extensive exhibition experience and technical knowledge of installing work in different mediums
• Extensive knowledge and experience in standard museum curatorial practices, exhibition development, and demonstrated networking in the national and international contemporary art world
• Outstanding skills in research, writing, and communication, demonstrated by published articles, essays or books
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships with artists, other institutions, donors, and collectors is essential

RELATIONSHIPS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Reports to the President and CEO and works collaboratively across all departments. Standard office environment requiring regular use of phone, computer, and copy machines. The person in this position frequently communicates with public membership and staff who have inquiries and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This person may attend events inside and outside of AWAACC, including evenings and weekends with occasional overnight travel.
