To write, edit, and produce high quality publications which contribute toward the accomplishment of the overall communications effort and organization’s mission. To work with the VP of Member & Energy Services in determining theme and content of the publications.
To provide communications expertise in public relations, media, member and marketing services, consumer services, and affiliate activities.
To provide effective communications of the Cooperative’s mission, programs, services, policies, events and developments to its membership, general public, and media.
To identify, research and prepare news releases in a timely manner for newsworthy items regarding Cooperative operations, achievements, awards, etc. This also includes successes earned by our staff and Board of Directors.
To design, prepare, edit, and publish Cooperative publications.
To develop, implement and evaluate advertising campaigns.
Track competitors advertising and PR efforts. Aid in development of visual and oral presentations, speech writing/editing and special projects.
To contribute to the progress of the department and the Cooperative with ideas and suggestions for new and better ways of accomplishing objectives.
To develop and maintain strong relationships with the media.
Plans and Controls
Plans and gathers information, writes, and produces regular publications such as: Cooperative Living magazine, Employee Newsletter, the Fact Book, and Annual Report.
Plans and coordinates advertising activities including official notices, goodwill advertising, and informational and instructional advertising with local newspapers and radio stations.
Creates, directs, and develops public information activities including planning, researching, preparing, designing, and coordinating the production of publication and materials for distribution to internal and external publics. Including magazine, newsletters, updates, press releases and other special publications.
Publishes the Cooperative’s Statement of Nondiscrimination annually to assist Human Resources.
Plans content and determines the layout of text and graphics, takes photos, writes, and proofreads text, and coordinates the production and distribution of the following publications:
Cooperative Living Magazine (monthly)
Cooperative Brochures and Bill Inserts
Notice of Annual Meeting
Products and Services Brochure
Maintains a record of media publication of provided materials
Establish a communications and media program by creating a network with all newspapers, radio stations, and television stations within MEC’s service territory.
Serve as the contact for advertising sales representatives.
Maintain regular contact with area media.
Develops and maintains advertising program.
Monitors newsworthy MEC activities, writes text, supplies photos, and coordinates the timely production and distribution of news releases to area media including newspapers, radio stations, and television stations.
Works with management, staff, and employees, gathering information to prepare, write, and print stories to be featured in monthly employee publications.
Responsible for message development, creative production, ad placement, ad tracking, advertising budget management.
Advises creative/media strategy budget management and message development for legislative affairs.
Maintains photo files.
Prepares periodic reports as required.
Produces Cooperative’s sales and informational materials including flyers, forms, booklets, brochures, member letters, bill stuffers, and new member packets. Responsible for the research, writing, editing, photography, and graphic design of these materials.
Responsible for the research, writing, editing, and photography of Cooperative’s news releases. Also tracks subsequent publicity and reports to management.
Serves as service bureau to all employees for publications, graphics, speech writing/editing, visual and oral presentation development, and presentations.
Assists in writing and taking photographs for the Cooperative’s newsletter and other publications to enhance the Cooperative’s image and keep members informed.
Maintains Cooperative photos and videos on MEC network, keeping them neatly organized and filed in appropriate folders.
Manages communications budget. Tracks all communications pending, ensure invoices are correct and paid in a timely matter and assigned the correct account number. Also maintains records of all communications expenditures.
Assists in developing advertising programs; develops themes, photos, text, layout, scripts, coordinates production and appearance of advertising in media; works with advertising personnel in buying placement of advertisements across all districts.
Assists department in creating internal and external publications and other marketing materials including gathering information, writing, editing, computer design and layout and proofreading news articles.
Develops annual and monthly story ideas for Cooperative Living
Develops news releases story and content
Generates photos, graphics, and illustrations for publications
Coordinates story assignments with outside vendors and contractors
Maintains accurate publication archives, records and coordinates publication materials used in other public relations or marketing materials.
Coordinates the publishing process with VP from conceptualization to printing.
Assists department VP with media relations, annual meeting planning, video production, and other related events.
Assists the department VP in the planning and administration of department sponsored activities such as employee breakfasts, training, Annual Employee Day, and other activities as assigned.
Prepares and distributes fact sheets, news releases, photographs, scripts, and videos to media representatives.
Coordinates live coverage of Cooperative issues to draw media coverage.
Evaluates, analyses, and recommends other public relations and marketing programs to department VP.
Exercise’s initiative and judgment in making decisions, remembering that the Cooperative can be affected by his/her actions.
Makes recommendations and suggestions for improvement in the operations of the department.
Secures approval from the supervisor in making decisions when policies or procedures require interpretation.
Completes a monthly report of activities and regularly attends monthly department staff meetings.
Prepares information for news releases in local newspapers.
Employee may be required to obtain an endorsement to their driver’s license to comply with the Virginia Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, which includes, but is not limited to, a physical examination, written examination, road test, and driver's record check at prescribed intervals.
Adheres to safety regulations as set forth by the Cooperative. Obtains certification in First Aid and CPR. Regularly attends safety meetings and participates in safety Reports all eminent danger situations immediately to supervisor.
Promotes safe working habits, safety procedures, and uses all protective equipment as prescribed by the Cooperative's policies and procedures.

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication, journalism, public relations, or English/literature is required.
Equivalent experience and on-the-job training may be considered in lieu of formal education.
Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license applicable to all types of vehicles he/she may be required to operate and maintains acceptable insurability by the Cooperative's insurance carrier.
A minimum of three to five years of progressive responsibility in desktop publishing, marketing, and communications is required. Five (5) years’ experience may be substituted for education.
Three (3) years’ experience in AP style written communication and publication production (writing, layout, and design) is required, as well as experience with electronic and print media; developing and implementing public relations and advertising plans, preparing materials for presentations, and managing relationships with media/public relations/advertising consultants is preferred.
A previous position combining public contact with a motivated and outgoing personality also preferred.
Knowledge and experience with social media platforms are required.
Experience with photography and videography is preferred.
Experience in InDesign, Photoshop, and video editing software preferred.
Journalism or public relations experience preferred.
