North Temperate Lakes Long Term Ecological Research (NTL LTER) studies the ecology of lakes as one of a network of sites established by the National Science Foundation. We are interested in how biophysical setting, climate, and changing land use and cover interact to shape lake characteristics and dynamics over time (past, present, future).
The Environmental Data Initiative (EDI) is a data repository where environmental data are publicly available for open and reproducible science promoting synthesis across space and time.
This position of a data curator for NTL LTER and EDI is a leadership role in both projects providing vision and guidance in data curation approaches and current best practices. The data curator is expected to be involved in community standards developments and lead local implementations. Provides data management consultation and engages with data creators, locally, nationally, and internationally to assure high quality data and metadata for discoverability and usability of published data products.
Both, NTL LTER and EDI, are NSF funded position and will require continued proposal development and customer interactions for future financial security.
This position is partial remote, with NTL LTER tasks requiring on site presence and EDI tasks being entirely remote in a distributed team.
Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and prepares and/or presents results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.
10% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
10% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
20% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
10% May supervise the day-to-day activities of a research unit as needed
20% Serves as a unit subject matter expert and liaison to internal and external stakeholders providing advanced level information and representing the interests of a specialized research area
10% Monitors program budget and approves unit expenditures
20% Researches, identifies, and implements up-to-date approaches and best practices to data curation

Required PhD or other terminal degree A PhD in an environmental science related field experience in data intensive research or data management in the area of environmental science.
Required: Familiarity with at least one scripting language (R or Python). Demonstrated attention to detail and good communication skills. Able to work individually and in a team.
Desired: Experience in publishing research results and demonstrated involvement in proposal preparation. Experience in presenting at scientific conferences, teaching or conducting training and demonstrated technical agility (experience using a variety of technologies, e.g., git, databases and SQL, XML, JSON, OpenRefine, JUPYTER, RStudio, various data types, etc.). Familiarity with data repositories and data description (metadata and their relevant standards) as well as web content development within the environmental sciences.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
