Description As part of the Marketing and Communications team, the Photographer is responsible for documenting through photography the people, functions and spaces affiliated with Hobart and William Smith Colleges including but not limited to events, classroom activities, scientific research, student life, exhibitions, performances, art, architecture, and athletics. In addition, the Photographer is responsible for a faculty and staff portrait library. This work involves photo journalistic, studio, lifestyle, and portrait photography both on and off campus. The right candidate will have an exceptional eye for composition and lighting.
This position works with all campus constituents to ensure that events, meetings, occasions, and people are captured visually and are appropriately cataloged. The Photographer oversees the cataloging and tagging of images so that our library is organized and simple to use and oversees a team of students performing the same tasks.
The Photographer must be comfortable directing subjects to obtain the best, most appropriate photos. The position requires exceptional social and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and work with individuals and groups.
Essential Responsibilities:
Proven experience shooting and editing well-composed photos for a wide range of communications and marketing purposes including the website, print and social media.
Technical photo finishing and retouching ability using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge and Photo Mechanic.
Detailed understanding of digital photography and cameras; serves as in-house expert on industry trends in photography.
Must have excellent computer, organizational, communication (verbal and writing), and problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage requests from multiple clients across campus including staff, faculty, and students.
Demonstrated ability to take exceptional photos in the studio and in field environments using both natural and artificial lighting.
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with design staff to further develop the Colleges' visual identity.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, lively, and always evolving environment.
Experience with drone photography preferred.
Willingness to travel and work outside normal business hours or weekends on a regular basis.
Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances.
Demonstrate knowledge for the Colleges' educational philosophy and mission.
Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
A four-year college degree, preferably in photography, is preferred with two or more years of experience required.
Must have professional level expertise in digital editing, workflow, and color management as well as proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
Applicants will be evaluated based on their visual storytelling acumen, demonstrated fresh approaches to editorial photography, written and interpersonal communication skills, and understanding of higher education and academic values.

Other Information:
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible administrative position. Normal campus office hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours time period.
