The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Interior Design and Textiles & Apparel seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor of Interior Design, starting in August 2024. This position will be filled as a renewable term Assistant Professor of Practice or as a tenure-track Assistant Professor based on qualifications. The CIDA accredited Interior Design program at UNI prepares students to be ethical, caring, and creative problem solvers in the interior design profession. The program offers a theoretical and practical approach to understanding residential and commercial design, with a focus on human behavior and evidence-based design. The position will include primarily traditional face-to-face delivery of undergraduate studio and lecture courses; assisting with program activities (recruiting and advising); assisting with studio and design library management; curriculum development and vision of the program; and assisting with regular and special events of the program.

Education requirements include at least one degree in Interior Design (undergraduate or graduate) and a Ph.D. in Interior Design, Architecture or other related field by August 1, 2024 for the tenure track Assistant Professor appointment. For the renewable term Assistant Professor of Practice appointment, a Bachelor's degree in Interior Design plus at least three years of experience required. Master's degree in Interior Design or related field preferred.
Required qualifications include demonstrated strong potential for effective and high quality teaching, including ability to address design elements and principles, contemporary design theory and processes, emerging technologies, relevant social issues, construction and detailing, and critical community engagement; effective verbal, written, and graphic communication skills; effective interpersonal skills; and demonstrated proficiency in current computer-aided design technology (such as AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite/Cloud, and SketchUp). For tenure track Assistant Professor, in addition to requirements listed above, must show demonstrated potential for completing and disseminating scholarly, creative, and/or applied works that will lead to recognized accomplishments through referred publications and/or juried exhibitions consistent with tenure and promotion expectations.
Preference will be given to candidates with University level teaching experience; professional practice experience in the interior design field (e.g., firm, in-house team, industry or manufacturing, public service, facilities management, construction management); NCIDQ certification; LEED Professional Accreditation; demonstrated effectiveness in using teaching technologies (e.g., Blackboard); and experience in building and maintaining relationships with industry.
