Prism Lighting Design is hiring! We’re a small, woman-owned lighting design studio based in Portland, Maine, seeking a Junior Lighting Designer intern to support our growing residential and landscape lighting portfolio. This part-time role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career designer with a background in lighting design, theater, architecture, or interior design.
You’ll work closely with the principal designer on conceptual design, fixture selection, layout drawings, and coordination with clients, architects, and contractors. The studio environment is highly collaborative, creative, and flexible, with opportunities for mentorship and professional development.
This is a Portland-based position with potential for a hybrid/remote arrangement for the right candidate, though in-person availability is preferred.
Responsibilities:
Assist with lighting design development for residential and landscape projects
Produce plans, fixture schedules, and spec packages using AutoCAD, SketchUp, and/or Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Word
Support fixture research, photometric analysis, and control planning
Coordinate with clients, architects, interior designers, and electricians
Help maintain studio organization, material samples, and documentation standards
Some education or experience in lighting design, theatrical design, architecture, interior design, or a related field
Familiarity with lighting concepts, layout plans, and basic controls
Proficiency in CAD (AutoCAD preferred); Adobe Creative Suite and SketchUp a plus
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced setting
A positive, collaborative, and curious attitude
Based in or willing to relocate to the Portland, Maine area (preferred), we could also be open to a remote position that will eventually be relocated more locally.
